Speech sound animations

The Speech Star website offers a visual approach to learning about speech sounds. Many of the videos on the site are real-time animations of vocal tract movements during speech, based on recordings made using Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The aim of this video-based resource is to help you understand the differences and similarities between English speech sounds.  Resources include half-head vocal-tract animations of the consonants of English, common consonantal substitutions and the sounds of the IPA and extIPA.  Also included are videos explaining ultrasound tongue imaging and its use in therapy and videos showing ultrasound tongue imaging therapy sessions.

STAR is the product of a collaboration between researchers at three Scottish Universities: the University of Glasgow, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, the University of Strathclyde, and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Secondary Data Analysis Initiative (SDAI). It includes material collected with funding from the ESRC, EPSRC, AHRC, CSO, Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and Action Medical Research.
